摘要

Context and setting International medical graduates (IMGs) may experience language and communication issues not only in doctor-patient interactions, but also during case presentations. Graduates from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds are likely to experience more difficulties than doctors from English-speaking backgrounds (ESBs) as a result of the specific language demands of the task and the medical cultural expectations associated with the delivery of the presentation. Why the idea was necessary A major component of the examination set by the Royal Australasian College of Physicians is the presentation of a 10-12-minute long case of a patient previously examined. Results from a Basic Physician Training Programme at an Australian health network indicated that fewer doctors from non-ESBs were successful on the oral clinical examination, although this difference was not apparent on the written multiple-choice question section. Language and communication were thought to be contributing factors.
