Introduction The earliest use of radio for patient internal telemetry appears to have been in 1957 at a Veteran's Hospital in New York, where a swallowable capsule capable of monitoring stomach pressures and temperatures was tried on an experimental basis. The use of radio for monitoring patients had obvious advantages in reducing nurse workloads, and in many cases, improving the patient's quality of life in hospital by allowing greater mobility. In the US, the Wireless Medical Telemetry Service1 was introduced in the early 1990s: this uses a number of frequencies between 600 and 1500 MHz. Although licence exempt per se, it requires frequencies to be co-ordinated to avoid interference, both within WMTS and to other services. The maximum radiated powers are limited, dependent upon frequency, to between 12 and 136 mW.
