Understanding community health medical education through action research.

Context and setting The Faculty of Medicine at the University of La Sabana dedicates 20 weeks to the collaborative development of community-oriented action research projects (COARPs) as part of the family and community health career training component of the undergraduate curriculum. Approximately 800 students and 30 communities participated in the programme between 1999 and 2007. An evaluation of the COARP programme was undertaken in an effort to systematise future collaborations.Why the idea was necessary Evaluating the community health programme facilitates a better understanding of the experience for both the community and the university. It informs the future development and planning of resources necessary to improve the teaching and learning experience for medical students and communities.
