Following last month's announcement by Alcoa to restart 209,000 tonnes of its idled capacity, the company has stated that it would be rapidly bringing on line idled capacity at the Portland aluminium smelter in Victoria, where approximately 24,000 tpy was idled.Russia produced 3.146m tonnes of primary aluminium in 1999, which was a 4.7 percent year-on-year rise against 1998. The total production level for the whole CIS region, including Tajikistan and Ukraine as well as Russia, was 3.487m tonnes last year, up 5.5 percent against the same level of 1998.
