In light of EU legislation, waste and recycling are becoming increasingly important to the political direction of the UK. With huge fines looming for those countries and local authorities that do not deal responsibly with their waste, the issue is rapidly moving up the policy agenda. Ministers have suggested that it will become one of the biggest issues by April 2008. Very real financial pressures will manifest themselves on all local authorities, and Minister for Local Government Phil Woolas believes it is crucial that the Government lays down in fine detail exactly what we, as a country, are trying to do. Available funds need to be as transparent as possible.
