Quality and quantity for a future of sustainable packaging

Improved material quality and the scrapping of packaging (waste) export recovery notes (PERNs) were a couple of the measures called for by representatives from the reprocessing industry last week. The great and the good from government, local authorities and industry gathered at the behest of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) to discuss the challenges that lay ahead with the packaging recovery targets for 2008. St Regis Paper chief executive Don Coates slammed the PERN system, saying they discouraged investment in UK reprocessing capacity, which had failed to grow as expected under the system.
