CORAL AQUACULTURE: QUALITY, QUANTITY AND SUSTAIN ABILITY

Large numbers of corals are being harvested from tropical reefs to supply the marine aquarium trade. This practice is one of the many human activities that continue to contribute to the rapid decline of natural coral populations. Growing efforts havebeen made to develop coral aquaculture in order to supply the increasing demand of corals by the marine aquarium trade, and also to restore natural coral reefs. In contrast to coral ecology and physiology, which have been thoroughly investigated over thelast decades, research on coral aquaculture has been comparatively scarce. Nevertheless, knowledge acquired by coral biologists can be used to improve current methods employed in coral aquaculture.
