■ The earliest attempts to control pipeline corrosion relied on the use of coating materials and the reasoning that if the pipeline metal could be isolated from contact with the surrounding earth, no corrosion could occur. This concept is entirely reasonable and logical. Furthermore, a coating would be completely effective as a means of stopping corrosion if the coating material: ◆ Is an effective electrical insulator ◆ Can be applied with no breaks whatsoever and will remain so during the backfilling process ◆ Constitutes an initially perfect film that will remain so with time.
