It is probably a mistake to over-analyse beauty. One of the most classically beautiful sights last year was a young female dragonfly (Libellula depressa). She was a glowing golden colour, bright and shiny. She was breathtaking. She was also dy-ing. She had recently emerged from her pupa and had probably rested to dry and warm up by the side of the pond just before a brief downpour. The extra weight of the water lowered the grass she had perched on so that the tip of her abdomen became sub-merged. She never dried out completely.
