Carbon and gas prices move against darks

European power prices have recorded mixed results over the past two weeks, with UK prices softening against rising prices in Germany. In the UK falling gas prices were largely attributed to the decline, along with returning capacity at E.ON UK's Ratcliffe power station. However, the interrelationship between German and Scandinavian markets helped support prices there, as hydro levels remain low. In addition, capacity constraints at Swedish nuclear plants also fed their way into Germany pricing. In the UK, the weekly day-ahead power price averaged 32.09 pounds/MWh (Spectron based) for the week ending August 25, this is 7 percent below the 34.46 pounds/MWh recorded two weeks previous. The weekly average spot gas price (again Spectron based) is 14 percent lower, at 32.37ppt from 37.44ppt. Gas prices have come off in response to falling demand and a generally healthier supply situation, even allowing opportunities to inject surplus gas into storage.
