Newcastle port quota system approved

Australia's competition authority, the ACCC, has over-ridden objections from a host of smaller shippers and given interim approval for the controversial Newcastle port quota system proposed by major shippers, led by Rio Tinto and Xstrata. The approval statement had mostly bad, but some slightly better, news for the many small shippers and traders who lodged objections, asserting they would be disadvantaged by the system. The ACCC is not convinced of their case, but says it will keep the matter under review.
