Who's a public health professional? The struggle for recognition by sanitary inspectors in early 20th century Canada.

As we conclude this 100th anniversary year of the Canadian Journal of Public Health (CJPH), we turn our attention to a little known chapter in the history of public health in Canada, the struggle by sanitary inspectors to improve their credentials and gain professional recognition in the early twentieth century. In the first decade of the Public Health Journal (PHJ), as the CJPH was then titled, discussion about the training and role of sanitary inspectors was a continuing theme, disproportionate in representation to their numbers as members of the Canadian Public Health Association.
