China was a net importer by 1.48mt for all coal qualities in the first quarter of this year, according to preliminary customs data and the monthly exporters survey carried out by MCR sister publication McCloskey China Coal Monthly (MCCM). The import tally for the first quarter stands at 11.26mt, down 2.1mt or 16 percent year-on-year, but China exported 9.78mt in that period, according to a monthly survey of the exporters by MCCM. Preliminary figures for March indicate that China imported 4.2mt, up 1.38mt or 49 percent compared with the final February figure of 2.8mt. The final import tally for January is 4.26mt. China exported 2.54mt of all qualities in March, down 1.74mt on the same period last year, but a sturdy performance given that exports could only commence after March 15, once the delayed export licences had been issued. MCCM had predicted March exports at 3mt.
