Analyst Fabiano Rosa of Scott Consultancy suggests that pressure on the meat industry to adopt sustainable practices is basically little more than the latest in a long line of non-tariff barriers aimed at restricting imports from Brazil. The concept has been welcomed and encouraged by producers in Europe who want to ensure that meat produced much more cheaply elsewhere has difficulty getting into the region, Rosa suggests. Brazilians, however, feel that producers in Europe want prices to remain high,so that they can continue in ways that would have disappeared long ago if it were not for the massive subsidies paid for by taxpayers.
