Formula SAE (FSAE) is an international racing car competition for teams of university undergraduates. Run under rules developed by SAE International (formerly the US Society of Automotive Engineers), the competition started in 1979. Last year Edith Cowan University's (ECU) team finished 14th out of a worldwide field of 511 competitors. The FSAE scoring system combines points for a series of dynamic events (speed and very frequent sharp turns), an endurance run of 22km (which most entries struggle to achieve), and a qualitative assessment based on design, cost, manufacture and presentation. Designs must conform to a formula, but otherwise there are relatively few restrictions. This freedom extends to materials, and as Kevin Hayward (who runs the FSAE program at ECU) emphasised, constructing quality FSEA cars depends critically on materials.
