The Atlantic Ocean off the Irish coast has seen many famous ships float and founder down the centuries. The Titanic passed as it hurried to its frosty demise. More than 40 ships from the Spanish Armada vanished in the late 16th Century as Britannia rippled its navai muscle. The old man of this sea even laid watery eyes on the saint that discovered America - an Irish monk by the name of Brendan. But that was a long time before a Nazi torpedo breached the hull of the SS Gairsoppa. The year read 1941 when the British cargo ship sank, along with more than 99 tonnes of insured silver bullion.
