Canso a do-do - There's a new container terminal coming to Nova Scotia. Who stands to benefit?

Separating mainland Nova Scotia from Cape Breton Island, the Strait of Canso has long served as a shortcut for marine vessels. If some stakeholders have their way, the narrow waterway may soon be home to Canada's next top container port. A private company, Melford International Terminal, Inc, is aggressively pursuing the green-field development of a site at the eastern opening of the Strait that will include a 315-acre deepwater container terminal, an intermodal rail facility tied to CN's Intermodal Excellence program and a 1,500-acre logistics park. The company has earmarked more than USD350 million for the project. It's hardly a frivolous notion: Melford planners have studied the feasibility of the terminal inside and out.
