A braking process is characterised by the complex interaction of a wide range of mechanical, thermal and chemical mechanisms. These various processes must be tailor-made to meet the requirements of the customer in terms of performance, cost-effectiveness, comfort and environmental compatibility. In view of global competition, such requirements, in particular those of the OEM, have increased significantly in recent decades and represent a large and interesting challenge for the whole friction material industry. In many cases, the optimal brake pad is a compromise between various customer requirements. The brake pad plays a central role in the braking system. Together with the brake disc, it is responsible for creating the frictional force and transferring it to the other components of the brake. The brake pad manufacturer is required to develop a brake pad that fulfils the entire range of customer requirements under the widest conceivable range of load conditions in a way that is as stable and robust as possible. During the development phase of a friction material, a continuous dialogue between customer and brake pad manufacturer is essential to come up with the optimal solution for the specified requirement profile, based on a wide range of test procedures.
