The efficiency of biological silage additives for the improvement of forage conservation is now well known. Farmers are however entitled to know about the possible effects of these additives on animal performances. Perennial ryegrass silage made with the biological additive Folia (DpH4) was compared with a similar silage made without. For each type of diet, various parameters of milk production were measured on two homogeneous batches of Prim'Holstein cows, during two successive periods. As the forage was easy to ensile, both types of silage were well conserved. During the second period, the animals fed the silage containing the additive had a greater intake and produced more milk and more protein than those fed the silage without additive.
