The importance of heat treatment in developing the properties of cast alloys has been recognised for more than a century, and modern techniques were the subject of a review in this publication in August 2003. The role of solidification in relation to the quality of castings presents a very different picture, and comprehensive studies and understanding of solidification phenomena came many years later. This can be largely attributed to the way in which the subject of physical metallurgy itself developed during the past century.
