Life and dynamics of permanent pastures. An example from the Central Pyrenees

The dynamics of permanent pastures are presented in a synthetic manner, and tools for their diagnosis are described, as an assistance when a change in the characteristics of the vegetation is desired. This synthetic representation comprises a model of vegetation dynamics based on the nature and abundance of the species in relation to the availability of minerals and to the intensity of sward use. Long-term changes in the vegetation of pastures are thus accounted for. There are two sub-models, which quantify the effects of the availability of minerals and of the frequency and intensity of use on the net production of herbage (actual and dynamic) and its digestibility. The diagnostic tools help to define and characterize various types of pastures. They constitute a basis for the rules of management to be chosen for the maintenance of a pasture type, or on the contrary for a change towards another type.
