Magnesium matters

A total of 336,107 tonnes of magnesium was produced globally in 2002, according to the International Magnesium Assn (IMA). The figure is 2.6 percent higher than 2001's total, and was made up from nearly 130,000 tonnes reported production and over 206,000 tonnes of estimated exports from non-reporting producers. Aluminium alloying shipments for 2002 stood at over 145,500 tonnes, nearly 3,000 tonnes above the previous year's total. Of this, the IMA estimates that close to 90,000 tonnes of shipments were made by the CIS and China, an increase of over 23,000 tonnes on 2001. Meanwhile diecasting shipments totalled almost 128,000 tonnes and desulphurisation shipments were around 57,000 tonnes for 2002.
