This Oregon mill ain't your father's competitor, as massive iron has been replaced with high-speed, high-recovery gear and almost 400 million bdft/yr in stud output. A quick walk through Roseburg Forest Products' Dillard stud mill in Dillard, OR, reveals a facility that has seen its share of the changes the US Pacific Northwest forest industry has experienced over the past few decades. At first glance, the sheer size of the mill leaves you with the impression of the big coastal mills of days gone by.Yet when you look a little closer, much of the older equipment that would have handled Oregon's huge old growth logs a couple of decades ago has been replaced by smaller and faster gear that is extremely accurate and optimizes today's smaller logs through the use of state-of-the-art scanners rather than a sawyer's experienced eye.
