Special issue introduction: Compaction processes - Porosity, permeability and rock properties evolution in sedimentary basins

This introduction is based on concepts described and discussed in more detail in Bjorlykke (2010). Understanding the different compaction processes that change porosity, permeability and rock properties in sedimentary basins with burial and time, is both scientifically and economically important, but has not received a comprehensive treatment since the reviews of Meade (1966), Rieke and Chilingar (1974), and Magara (1978). This collection of papers may represent a first step stone for revisiting this important theme.
