It's common practice these days for university undergraduates to have to submit their work via academic plagiarism detection devices, such as Turnitin. These can spot patterns of words and ideas and provide an indication of whether students are guiltyof purloining someone else's work. Plagiarism has become a big issue in recent years for universities and their libraries. The British, Man-Booker Prize winning novelist Howard Jacobson once described it as a "species of cynicism, sometimes encouraged by panic". There is some truth in this and it makes poor students (and lazy ones) all the more vulnerable to temptation.
