A group management structure and methodology for managing symmetric groups using non-hierarchical communications is presented. Group management is distributed to all group members (602, 604, 606) of the non-hierarchical network (608), and information about the group (334) is mirrored in each of the members (602, 604, 606) group (600). The structure facilitates the management of group member (s) lists (336), provides group communication capabilities for external applications (204, 35) and security for group communication without the need for intermediary servers to provide services.
