Over the previous three decades, the use of MRI for studying dynamic physical and chemical processes of materials systems has grown significantly. This mini-review provides a brief introduction to relevant principles of MRI, including methods of spatial localization, factors contributing to image contrast, and chemical shift imaging. A few historical examples of H-1 MRI for reaction monitoring will be presented, followed by a review of recent research including H-1 MRI studies of gelation and biofilms, H-1, Li-7, and B-11 MRI studies of electrochemical systems, in vivo glucose metabolism monitored with F-19 MRI, and in situ temperature monitoring with Al-27 MRI.
