摘要

William Gilhooley, a lifetime member of the American Scientific Glassblowers Society, died on October 5 in San Marcos, California, at the age of 83. He had served the Society in numerous capacities, most notably as its ninth President in 1971. Bill was born and raised in northern Pennsylvania where his father was a coal miner. After graduating from Mayfield High School, his parents sent him to Schenectady, New York, to live with his aunt and uncle in hopes of finding a better life. It was not long before he began the work that would become his career when he joined the General Electric Company in 1940 as an apprentice in the Vacuum Tube Department. He married a local girl, Josephine Wronski, and when World War II broke out, he joined the Navy. He served as a glassblower for the Naval Research Laboratory from 1943 to 1946. Afterwards, he returned to Schenectady to resume his career with General Electric. At the time of his retirement in June of 1983, he was the Manager of the Glass Equipment and Development Shop and held three US Patents.
