We were contacted by Russel Boyd on behalf of Bruce Harwood of the University of Western Ontario regarding concerns about the safety of working Quartz. They were interested in topics that they should consider when setting up and running a glass shop. I opened the topic up to the bulletin hoard and several members contacted Mr. Boyd. Among the hazards discussed were adequate ventilation and protection of the eyes and skin from UV. I warned about the dangers of etching compounds. Jean Farmer contacted the National Office. Her son was setting up a glass bench in a shed and was concerned about safety. T replied, emphasizing the danger of propane and a fire. I also suggested that they contact Glassline Magazine, www.HotGlass.com, to see if they could purchase Volume 16 number 2 (August 2002) and Volume 16 number 3 (October 2002). These contain good information on ventilation and setting up a shop. They were pleased with the response; I also suggested that their son may want to attend a section meeting in their area to meet glassblowers.
