Obituary--JAMES MICHAEL (JACK) VANDENHOFF 1933-2015

Veteran National Research Council employees were saddened to learn of the recent passing of James Michael (Jack) Vandenhoff, NRC's most renowned scientific glassblower from 1955 to 1989. Jack was trained as a glassblower in Eindhoven, Holland before coming to Canada. He began his career at NRC in the Division of Chemistry, and by the time he retired as chief glassblower, he had made significant contributions to a variety of disciplines and applications in science. Jack's imagination, versatility and craftsmanship allowed him to create specialized glass technologies for use with lasers, semiconductors, polymers, catalysts and biotechnology. Some of the glassware he created was so specialized it even made it to space aboard NASA's space shuttles.
