We can be thankful that Denmark's King Christian fV (1577-1648) had a'taste for landscaping and architecture at a young age, when he sought to expand Copenhagen's city limits.King Christian IV succeeded to the Danish royal throne in 1588 at the tender age of 11, beginning a reign of 60 years (the longest of any Danish monarch), and formally took control in 1596. He desired a summer retreat featuring a productive kitchen garden and, in 1606 (when he was not yet 30), he acquired property outside Copenhagen's east rampart for the project.
