Hard evidence from Studer

At the February Studer grinding symposium, the further sharing of technology among Schliefring Group grinding technology companies was made evident. Already announced had been the Studer S2+2 and Schaudt Kairos grinding/hard turning units which use a common platform. Now, added to this will be a second common platform based on the Studer S12, this time with Mikrosa also sharing in its use alongside Schaudt The S12 will be used to support the Mikrosa Kronos XS and Schaudt Zeus S machines. Studer of Thun, Switzerland, is where all machine bases for Studer, Schaudt and Mikrosa machines are manufactured now, so a sharing of technology is only to be expected. Accordingto Studer's managing director, Fred Gaegauf: "The fundamental concept is to produce bases I in volume with customer requirements realised at one of three locations-Thun, for Studer; Stuttgart for Schaudt; and Leipzig for Mikrosa." This will support higher volume output from the Thun facility, says Mr Gaegauf. Indeed, the company is just introducing a third assembly shift for the higher volume bases and is targeting eight-day assembly for the Studer S33, for example.
