High-school welding: Alive and Flourishing in the District School Board of Niagara

Despite all the changes wrought upon high-school technology programs since the early 1990s, some welding programs have managed to survive, and in some cases are growing in strength and popularity among the technology students who attend Niagara schools. The demise of some secondary-school welding programs began in the late 1980s. The Ontario Ministry of Education moved away from specific-trade training and embraced a broad-based approach to technological education, focused on the design process, computer skills and acquisition of general technical skills. In most cases, students could not specialize in a specific technology until they reached the senior grades.
