In recent years, concerns over Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP) being a potential food-borne zoonotic agent 1, 2, 3 and, hence, possibly contaminating foods of animal origin, in particular dairy products 4, 5, has led some extra-EU countries to require specific bovine paratuberculosis (bPT) warranties for trading.Italy exports various dairy products, such as Parmesan cheese, mozzarella and gorgonzola, to extra-EU countries such as China and India. This export trend is rapidly increasing because these countries are among the fastest growing emerging markets.
