Lush, tropical plants, hot colours, exotic birds & fish ponds transform a shady, rubble-strewn wasteland. Roger Horan loves heat--warm air, hot colours--and the creative tension of his lush gardening style in a municipal greenbelt reflects this. Following the theory that opposites attract, his being drawn to all things tropical isn't altogether surprising--he's an Irish horticulturist who trained at the National Botanic Gardens at Glasnevin, and his home was within sight of chilly and grey Dublin Bay. His nine-year labour to bring warmth and colour to a shallow ravine behind a strip mall in Mississauga, Ontario, has resulted in an oasis of tropical foliage, aviaries and fish ponds within a shady enclave of mature maples and wild, scrubby growth, It's a tiny, perfect jewel of vibrant colour and jungle-like leaves.
