It is true that cold polar air has caused very high losses in places across the country from Catalonia to Huelva, but it is very difficult to assess the extent of the damage correctly at such an early stage. Most of the reports currently going the rounds of the media are exaggerated to say the least. Of course, the producers have a great interest in quoting damages which are as high as possible. This has a lot to do with the insurance companies. Various autonomous regions have announced their intention to apply for recognition as a disaster area, as a number of aid measures would then be forthcoming.
