摘要

In the 1950s and 60s Detroit, the largest city in the US state of Michigan, was a metonym for the Big Three automobile companies Ford, General Motors and Chrysler. For many decades the automotive industry had enriched the city by offering well-paid jobs to tens of thousands of workers. Today the city that once symbolized America's wealth like no other place, has turned rural. Vacant lots of land have turned into vegetable fields, and where once huge vehicles with giant spoilers used to be assembled, you'll find chickens bustling around. While the city council has merely tolerated this symbiosis of metropolitan and rural idyll so far, many urban developers view this agro-industrial hybrid system as a resort and model for other US cities suffering from similar problems.
