In the battle against obesity in children the European Union called on its member states to support the cross-national EU campaign by launching national programs that correspond with the life-style and standard of living in the respective countries. The best-known actions are the national fruit school schemes which introduce children to a healthy diet, offering school meals based on fruits and vegetables. In Italy the program is called "Frutta nelle Scuole", and targets children between 6 and 11 years. Offering a diverse range of healthy food, children are encouraged to select meals to their taste without pressure from public advertising or commercials. From 2010 children are provided with free fruit and vegetable servings in schools.
