I'm never quite ready to see the summer fruit season end. Apples, grapes, and even figs and pears, don't quite make up for the loss of Chandler strawberries, apricots, white and yellow nectarines, O'Henry and Cal Red peaches, and the endless procession of whimsically named pluots. Red Flame and Thompson seedless grapes are sweet but nothing special, and apples—well, you can get apples all year round, picked in Washington or New Zealand and kept in controlled atmosphere cold storage until they're shipped to the central distribution center for your local supermarket.
