The French strawberry season was officially launched on March 12 but only 100 tonnes were brought to market during the first week. The estimated total of 55 000t this season is small compared with the 300 000t forecast from Spanish production, thoughreduced export potential to Germany may pose the greater threat. The first strawberries came from Brittany and the southwest: supplies from the latter were expected to reach their peak at the end of March/beginning of April. Val-de-Loire product from the area round Saumur was forecast to peak in early April, and that from Sologne at the beginning of May.
