Unlike tomato plants it seems that the principle of "more light, more stems" is not applicable to sweet pepper plants. What growers can improve upon is the balance between the work involved and the yield. We have learnt that the planting density of tomatoes must be based on the available light. We wanted to see if this was also true for sweet peppers," says Wim van Wingerden, consultant at Green Q, the Netherlands. "That is why we have set up trials at the Improvement Centre to compare i stem on eachplant and 5.5 stems a square metre with 2 stems on each plant and 6 stems a square metre. Our objective is to get the optimum production and an optimum plant burden."
