Declaring War on Pathogens: Center for Produce Safety research yields lessons for processors, growers

After two days and presentations from 16 research programs at the 2013 Center for Produce Safety (CPS) annual symposium, two key figures in CPS have gleaned a list of take-home messages for produce companies. The current chairman of the CPS technicalcommittee, Dave Gombas, and past chairman Bob Whitaker identified key points learned from the gathering. Take a "seek and destroy" approach to listeria. Taking a cue from the processed deli meat industry, produce processors should conduct a robust searchfor places where listeria can become established and launch an aggressive sanitation program to keep the bacteria away from those places.
