New Brunswick Blasts Calais LNG Project, Again Raising Specter of Vigorous Cross-Border Debate over Jurisdiction and Impacts of U.S. Project

The Canadian Province of New Brunswick this week filed a sharply worded motion asking FERC to reject the 12/18/09 applications of Calais LNG Project Co. LLC (CP10-32) and Calais Pipeline Co. LLC (CP10-31) for certificates related to their proposed liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal and pipeline project in the State of Maine. The Province insisted the project developers failed to address issues vital to New Brunswick, in particular, the cumulative impact of both the Downeast LNG, Inc. (CP07-52 et al.) project, still pending, and Calais proposals, the real and credible risk of accidental release, and the impact to Roosevelt Campobello International Park and Herring Cove Provincial Park.
