Columbia Gas Seeks Authorization to Continue Experimental Ramp-Up of Injections at Three Storage Fields for Three More Years

On May 28 Columbia Gas Transmission, LLC (CP10-445) applied to FERC for a certificate authorizing the company to continue to evaluate the effect of increasing gas injections into its Lanham, Terra Alta, and Terra Alta South Storage Fields in West Virginia. Columbia further requested approval be granted no later than September 1 to maximize the remaining number of injection days prior to the end of the traditional injection season. A Commission order issued 9/19/07 authorized Columbia (CP07-433) to temporarily increase volume in its Lanham, Terra Alta, and Terra Alta-South fields for a period of up to 3 years. Then and now, Columbia seeks to validate using these storage fields to develop further storage services for customers. Granting the instant proposal, the applicant explained, affords Columbia the opportunity to operate these fields at potentially higher capacity and shut-in pressures for extended periods. Assuming successful results from the injection testing, seismic acquisition, and other engineering and geologic analysis, Columbia ultimately expects to be in a position to offer this capacity on a firm basis separately or in conjunction with an expansion of its storage facilities at a later time.
