In the U.S., gum rosin production was discontinued at the end of 2004 when the last remaining gum rosin facility owned by Akzo at Baxley, Georgia, was closed. In Europe, Portugal, once a producer of an average of 84,200 tons of gum rosin, is producing barely one-tenth of that quantity today. The major producers of this commodity today are China, Indonesia and Brazil. Unfortunately, none of today's major producers keep statistical records as were once provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Instituto dos Produtos Florestais of Portugal. However, to understand the details of gum rosin production, it is our opinion that historic data from the U.S. and/or Portugal provides valid, applicable data for the current production in China, Indonesia and Brazil.
