DESPITE the size of the salmon feed market, we are a relatively invisible player in the global trade of feed ingredients. It is estimated that the use of soybean meal for salmon feed is less than 1% of the available export out of the three most important soy exporters (US, Brazil, Argentina). On the other hand, the salmon feed business is consuming at least 75% of the available export of fish oil. These two examples highlight the need for aquafeed producers to secure access to ingredients we are dependent on and explore ways to improve our use of other abundantly available feed ingredients.
