Typically, the European mole (Talpa europaea) is associated with agricultural grassland, but increasing numbers are spilling over into forest and amenity areas sousing serious land-management problems, as Dr Terry Mabbett makes clear in his followingcomprehensive report on the pest- its distribution, its habits and habitat and the many and varied methods of its eradication. The main food source for moles is earthworms, and the need to consume large numbers is the sole reason for its tunnelling in aparticular area. Moles prefer lowland forests and grassland without heavy or sandy soils.
