Algae production is reaching a tipping point, where it goes from being a product with potential to a potential game*-changer. That is the conclusion of a report compiled by Rabobank analysts Lian Heinhuis and Gorjan Nikolik, which investigates the possibilities of using microalgae in human and animal nutrition. It might be difficult to predict exactly how imminent algae's tipping point will be - Heinhuis said you would need a crystal ball, but she did speculate that it would be within five years. As microalgae are a source of omega-3 oils they can be used as substitutes for fish oil and fishmeal and Heinhuis sees a leading role for the aqua feed industry in the development of algae, 'because that is where the greatest need is'.
