Otter ferry rises to the challenge of wrasse

OTTER Ferry Seafish, on the shores of Loch Fyne, is currently home to around 12,000 Ballan wrasse (Labrus bergylta), which are being bred as part of a E660,000 research programme, funded by The Scottish Salmon Company, Meridian Salmon Group and the Crown Estate. 'This number is just enough to clean one salmon site of sea lice, and industry estimates put the total number required to provide a sustainable and environmentally friendly sea lice solution at 2 million per year. We aim to upscale our own breeding programme to produce around 200,000 fish per year, so you can see the scale of the challenge we face,' said MD Alastair Barge.
