'Big-headed' response to BIG-TREE challenge

While there will always be a need for hand-cutters to handle rough edge trees, their scarcity on the labour market means contractors have looked increasingly at the mechanised option: the effectiveness of today's large and powerful harvesting heads isbecoming more and more important, as Eoghan Daly reports. When a prominent south-eastern Ireland harvesting contractor decided to take action to meet the scarcity of hand-cutters by acquiring a high-capacity harvesting head he found that choices were limited. Even though many large heads in the 85cm felling diameter class were on the market they were unproven under Irish conditions which made them relatively unappealing.
